Default Kenmore / Frigidair - Getting really hot??
Model Number: 417.83142201   Brand: Kenmore   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

So, I am a poor college student, so I cant spend a whole lot.. Anyway, I bought this, tried it out at the ladies place and it seemed to run fine.. I didnt feel for heat on the rear though..

I cleaned it out, and pulled out about an entire cat front the vents worth of lint and dust...

I rewired it to 3 prong accordng to the manual...

It is getting REALLY hot on the rear/top.... and on the rear... It even has evidence of the heat resistant paint being ... well changing color due to heat!

I want to know if I wired this up right, and it it is supposed to get this hot...

I made a video to illustrate what is going on and I will post it once it is authorized by Youtube! or check out YouTube - Acecool's Channel about 20 minutes after this post to see it...

Here is how I wired it... HOT / NEUTRAL / HOT (Just as the wire is laid out)

The ground I left attached to the case from the center prong... Then, I moved it to the center one, which just loops back around and it functions exactly the same!!

The rear vent blows hard, and feels as though it is in spec of 150-155 degrees fahrenheit - when it is running.

Well, my question is, is this dryer supposed to run this hot, on high heat... it seems like it gets this hot on low heat too, but the element doesnt stay on as long... Any help is GREATLY appreciated...

The dryer is from 03/03.. MY older dryer just quit starting so thats the reason for buying this one...

I think you have three possibilities here. To find the problem you will need to open up the dryer and take out the drum. To do this, insert a screw driver or putty knife in the gap between the top and front near the edges to release the clips that hold the top to the cabinet. The top will not flip up.

You can now take off the front, and take off the service panel in the rear to release the belt. You can now lift the drum so that the ball comes out of the plastic holder and the drum comes out. You are now ready to diagnose your problem.

1. Take off the blower cover and make sure the blower is working correctly and there is no lint or obstruction in the blower duct.

2. Examine the element to make sure it is not grounded against the frame.

3. If these two do not fix the problem, I would replace the cycling thermostat.

Good luck.

Did you check out the video?

It seems as though it is cycling properly, and all!

The top is metal, so I can expect it to get hot... but should it be that hot?

Let me know when you have watched the video :-)

Cannot find much info on your unit.

Your test with the door open is not really valid as it screws up the unit.
The air is pulled through the heating coils, then the drum/lint filter and pushed out the exhaust. So opening up the door messes up the air flow.

If you are sure that the temp selector works then you probably have an air flow problem.
If the contacts in the cycling thermostat are welded together the unit will run on the hi-limit thermostat which runs at a higher temperature.
Check that all seals and gaskets in the air path are OK.
Check that the blower wheel is clean.
Check that the lint filter is clean. If the old owner used a lot of fabric softener, it can coat the lint filter screen drastically reducing air flow. Clean it with soap and water.
If the unit has
If the unit has a louvered vent on the back to let air into the cabinet make sure that it is clean.

I did a test with door open, and door closed.

Ill put it all back together, and try again, and try to use it to dry some towels...

Air flow seems to be perfect when door closed, blows strong out of the rear, and I already cleaned all of the vents - got about a 10lb cat worth of hair out of it :-P
