Default Did installers fry our brand new dryer?
Model Number: DLEX5170W (LG)   Brand: -brand-   Age: Less than 1 year

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

We just moved into a newly renovated home and had a new LG washer and dryer pair delivered yesterday. My wife was home at the time of delivery. She called after the installers left and said the dryer would not turn on (why they don't test operation before leaving is beyond me). I told her to check the dryer breaker in the main panel as I remembered it was off when we moved in. She flipped the breaker on, sparks came out of it, our TV and microwave turned off, and the lights briefly dimmed.

I believe the installers are the ones who wired the 4-prong dryer cord. This was a "GE Installation Team" and the cord is branded as a GE. The was the insulation is stripped does not look like a factory job. I'm assuming they install the proper cord (3 or 4 prong) once they are on site and see what outlet the customer has.

Out of curiosity, I pulled the wiring cover off, and it does not match the diagram on the back of the machine at all. By my eye, 4 of the 5 connections are made incorrectly (hey at least the red wire is in the right place).

I've tried correcting the wiring and the dryer is still unresponsive. I'm worried that if it was wired incorrectly to begin with, it got pretty well cooked when my wife threw the breaker on. Is this possible?

Retailer (Home Depot) is telling us to call the installer (GE), who is telling us to call the manufacturer (LG).

denman is a splendid one to behold

Yes your wiring is all screwed up.

Here is the manual for this unit and it has info on how th power cord should be hooked up.

Besides putting the black, green and white from the power cord in the wrong place. They did not move the white ground strap to the center terminal lug.
They also did not install a strain relief onto the power cord. Over time a wire could wear through due to the machine vibrating and cause a short. Also if someone pulled the unit out too far a connection might come loose and again cause a short.

If the install company put that cord on then they are responsible.
Contact the better business bureau and any other organization involved with electrical safety in your area. Regulatory bidies take electrical safety very seriously.
If Home Depot contracted out this company to do the install then they are also responsible.

This could have resulted in a fire.
Unless I am missing something LG has nothing to do with this.
Whoever put that cord on the unit was a goof and should not be working on electrical equipment.

This may have done damage to the breaker, wall receptacle etc. and they are also responsible for this.

Read them the riot act.

What you have is a dead short to ground. I am amazed that installers are connecting cords. These should be installed by a licensed electrician not untrained delivery men. I would call Home Depot and let them know what their GE installers did. Also have them replace the appliance. There may be damage.
