The dryer heats up and works properly except the thing will not shut off, I have to manually turn the dial to get it to quit running.

Any thoughts? Timer?

If it will not advance in both timed dry and auto cycle types then odd are that the timer is toast.

Getting tech info on GE's is difficult as they like to keep all tech info a big secret.

On most units the timer motor gets power via different paths in timed and auto which is why you have to check both cycle types.

You could check the timer by doing a live test.
If the timer motor is getting power (120 volts) but not advancing, it is toast.
I do not recommend you do this unless you have electrical experience.
There is 240 volts at the timer and it is lethal!!!
