Hey APP forums,

I recently moved into a rental home for a year and the previous residents left us a washer and dryer in the basement - which, according to the landlord, didn't work anymore. (he was right)

I fixed the washer but the dryer is appearing to be a bit of a struggle. I'm unsure of the age, but it looks to be within 10 years old. When I started trying to figure it out, the power cord was disconnected and placed across the room.. I'm not sure why they did that, but I reattached it fine. When I press the start button on the dryer, regardless of the setting, it doesn't start. It doesn't buzz, hum, or stutter. It seems lifeless. The door switch appears to be working fine, it clicks within range of the door shutting.

I tested the wall plug with a meter and it shows a current, so it's not that.
Power is going through to the machine, it's just not starting.

(I actually accidentally blew up my ohm meter by touching it on the back 3 power cord connectors, so I'm about to go to the store to pick up another)

I assume the first / next step for me is to test the start switch for continuity?

I would recheck the power first. Neutral (white) to L1 (black) is what runs the motor and should be 120 volts. Another way to check it is if the interior light works. Also if the timer advances at mid-scale timed dry with the door closed, this confirms that you have power and that the door switch is OK.

The most common cause of a dead dryer is a blown thermal fuse (Item 19 in the Bulkhead Parts section).

If blown replace it.
Also check/clean the vent system as this is the most common cause of it blowing.
Check that the outside louvers on the vent open properly.
