tried to dry 2 pairs of tennis shoes. they kept banging against the dryer door and opening it. then after a few minutes the one tennis shoe jammed against the inside and stopped the dryer. i closed the dryer door then tried to push the start button but nothing happened. dryer will spin but no tumbling.

Do you mean the motor runs but the drum is not turning?
If that what it is you need the new belt.

Roper RE86745PQ0 dryer. Bought in 2005. Could not find on whirlpool website. Anyway dryer was working fine before tennis shoe got jammed in one of the corners.

Your model number must be RES6745PQ0.
You didn't answer my question: Does the motor run but the drum not turning?
If that what it is replace the belt Part number: 341241
