My gas dryer will not turn/spin. I checked the timer (OK), door switch (OK), fuse (OK). Removed panels and cleaned everything (it was dirty). When I hit the ON button the motor trys to turn (humming sound - I guess it dosen't know the words) but seens to be bound up. I tryed helping the tub to turn by hand (opened the door and spun the tub with the door switch depressed) but it did not help. The tub does not spin very freely when pushed by hand (lots of resistance).

I suspect the motor is shot. Please advise.

Hi Mike,

Remove the belt and check if the motor moves freely.

If it does not - replace the motor.

Thanks for the info posted here. I just replaced a motor and blower fan. And my dryer works like new right now!!

Thank you so much for the links above. Using them I was able to fix my brother's broken dryer with ease.
I was going to take apart the whole machine from the back, but that site saved me. In ten minutes I was able to take apart the entire machine and determine the belt was broken but motor worked fine. Replaced broken belt, and upgraded pulley to wheel-type.
Total time under 30 minutes
