My Maytag Neptune dryer is giving us intermittent heat. Some loads dry in normal time, and other don't completly dry even after extended dry times on sesor mode. Running on timed mode yields same results.

I've already cleaned the entire duct inside and out; checked therostats, thermo fuse, and thermister for continuity and everything checked good. I watched it cycle briefly with no clothes in it and the ignitor would glow bright, and burner would fire. It would run for a minute or two then shut off. It would stay off for a less than a minute then fire again. I watched it through 2 or 3 cylces with similar results.

Any thoughts or suggestions what it could be and what/how I should check it next?

Hi.

Continue watching the gas burner for a longer time.
You may see that ignitor glows but no gas. In that case you need to replace the control coils Part number: 279834
Part number: 279834

Here the breakdown diagrams and Replacement parts for Maytag MDG5500AWW DRYER- GAS | AppliancePartsPros.com

Good luck. Post the results.

Simon.

Simon, it sure seems like you know what you're talking about. I watched it on a timed cycle for about 10 minutes when it finally happened. It cycled on and off every minute for about 10 cycles, then the coil heated and no ignition. The coil shut off and after about 20 seconds it heated again and nothing. After another 20 seconds it heat and finally ignited. I'll be ordering the coils today. Thanks so much. :D

I guess there's no way to test which coil is bad, or is it best to just replace both? Oddly the parts are listed at $25-$35 individually, but only $15 for the kit with both coils. Am I reading that correctly?

Hi.

Go for the kit. The less expansive coils will work.

Good luck.

Simon.
