I have a Maytag electric dryer model Number MDE6800AYW. Whenever the dryer is running there is a loud banning noise coming from the machine. The noise does not appear to be load related as the size and contents of the load do not affect the noise. It just keeps getting worse. If you are facing the machine while it is running, and feel the left outer panel, it feels as though the banging is something slamming into the side panel. Thanks for helping diagnosis the problem.

It sounds like something on the drum is physically hitting the outside shell. You're going to need to open it up and see what it is before it destroys something.

It could be as simple as a screw in one of the tumbling arms having come loose and sticking out far enough to hit the case as it turns. Or it could be something else.
