When dryer starts, it runs for perhaps 10 seconds and the throws the breaker. It appears to be an electrical problem. (duh?) I've checked the voltage at the cord connection to dryer. Both sides read 120v. Checked the conection at wall outlet. Same result. Changed the breaker to standard 240 30 amp breaker. (it had been connected to 2 120v 30amp breakers. When the breaker threw out then, it would kick off one side only and leave the 110 to control panel.) Is it possible that one of the thermal switches could be bad causing the short? It seems there's not enough time to cause an overheat reaction.
Any thoughts?

Well, the first thing we say to do is to replace the breaker so you can rule out a bad breaker, but you have already done that and robbed us of our best answer.

A faulty motor is the likely suspect, but before going there lets see if we cannot find some less expensive cures.

1. Check the grounding wires and make sure you have a properly grounded plug setup. It is different depending upon whether or not you have a 3 prong or 4 prong plug.

2. Check the heating element to see if it is ok, and in particularly make sure it is not grounding against the frame.

If these don't do it, report back and give us your model number and let's see if we cannot come up with something else. You gotta being doing some heavy duty current to trip the 30 amp breaker.

Your responses to my problem with the Maytag dryer were right on and led me to the problem. After being sure the breaker was not the problem, I went to be sure the ground was properly secured, and moved on to the heater coil. When I opened up and exposed the coil tube, I noted that the wiring harness was up against the coil sleeve and one wire had melted and shorted out to the metal sleeve. Once that wire was spliced and wrapped, and the wiring bundle was secured away from the coil, all was well.
THANKS!
