When I push the start button, the motor hums, but doesn't start the drum. I can rotate the drum by hand, so it isn't stuck. Even after two trys for about 1/2 second each, there is an electrical burn smell, so I suspect the motor. Where do I go from here? Thanks

Sounds like the motor needs replacing.

I would not order anything until you open the unit up and find out if it needs any other parts re: belt, rear rollers, idler wheel, drum seals etc. That way you will know the total cost of an overhaul.
Also often the blower wheel must be destroyed to get it off as it can seize to the motor shaft.

If you click on the picture of a part a new page will open with more info, views and a Q&A about that part.

Here is a manual which should be helpful.

Thanks Denman,

I tried turning the drum while pushing the start drum and it runs, so looks like the start windings in the motor are bad. I'll be replacing all rollers, idler bearing and belt as a matter of maintenance since it's 9 years old. Have not tried to get the fan off yet, but hopefully it'll come off easily.

Thanks for the help
Jerry

Just a quick note, the motor did have an open in the start winding. To anyone replacing the motor for any reason, go ahead and order the blower wheel to save you time, because if it's more than a year or two old, the wheel will be frozen to the shaft and it will not be useable once you get it off.
