When you push the start botton after setting the drying mode the unit beebs and the two digit timing light just flashes and nothing happens. If you push any other bottons it beebs and continues to flash. When I ran a diagnostic test all the function lights came on and 3E appears in the timer window not E3.

Well, you see when the blithering idiots at Whirlpool (and other companies also) decided to put in microprocessor controls one of their brilliant thoughts was that the control board could be programmed to diagnose any problem with the machine, thus making it easy to repair.

What of course the idiots failed to ask themselves is what happens when the microprocessor or the control board itself fails, thus rendering the entire process untenable. So when something like your problem occurs is it the control board or is it something else?

It is possible to get the 3E error code, which has something to do with the software in the microprocessor but really means that you, the owner, have no way of knowing what is wrong. Your only recourse is to replace the control board and hope that fixes the problem. That's what tech would do who visited your home.

Given the cost of the part and the lack of certainty in the repair I would opt for a new, no frills, no micro processor dryer.

Good luck

thanks for the response. I hope it's not the control board. I did hear that it might be the door switch. Is it possible for this to work for the drum light only and not recognize when the door is closed?

I believe the control board has the door switch inputs labled. Pull out your service sheet to verify your door switches are indeed closed when you close the door.
Also, a way off thermister resisance will cause problems with starting.
