Maytag Neptune dryer has a pingent, musty smell that is not a gas smell. I have had several repair people out to check all external and internal propane gas connections. The smell can be detected at inside back of the dryer where there is a grill but mostly it is coming form the external rear of the dryer where there is also a grill. The smell ahs been there for 5+years and was assumed to be the HE washer. The front of the dryer has been removed by an authorized repair person and no problems were found. All vents have been checked for debris etc. We have also confirmed that the semll is NOT coming from the washer. We have not removed the back of the dryer yet. Can you help?

I've seen a few times nests of rats inside a dryer air ducts and/or blower housings.

Gene.
P.S. The model number you posted is of the washer.

How do I remove the back of the dryer which is basically the whole housing to see if rats have nested. Woudl the smell be intermittent and last for over 5 years? The model # is MDG4000BWQ.

The rear panel for this dryer is not removable. The access to all parts including the air ducts is from the front only.

When you said

did you mean the house vents with the outlet too?

How far and where the dryer vent goes?

Gene.

The air silver air duct that exitsd the dryer is about 1.5 feet long and is less that 6 inches from the wall to exit the house. The ducts have all been removed and checked for debris and rodents. Someone suggested that there is lint that has a moldy smell inside the dryer but the front panel has been removed and all the lint has been vacuumed out. It still smells from the back vent on the rear of the dryer.

What is near by the vent outlet (outside the house)? May be that smell is coming from outside?

Otherwise I have no clue.
