I have burned up 2 igniters. Any sugestions on possible causes?

Please, provide more specific details on how you installed them. Did you touched the black part of the ignitor?

No. Wearing latex gloves the whole time. installed igniter, turned dryer on, started up normal, next day it would not dry, pulled apart and found igniter cracked again.

The situation you are describing is unheard. I can think of a couple scenarios: defective ignitors batch or you are overtightened the ceramic base. Try again and be very careful not to touch the black portion at all no matter with what and not over tighten it.
