I am actually an appliance repair tech and I am having a weird problem that I can't figure out and would love some help. I called Whirlpool directly but as usual they gave me form read information that proved unhelpful. I have a customer whose heating element has shorted out three times in the last six months. The first time I replaced it and it shorted out about a month later I assumed I had a defective element but now it has happened two more times in the last 5 months and I simply can not find the culprit. I have changed all the thermostats and checked for proper venting etc but still the elements seem to last about a month or two at most. Has anyone else experienced this and found a resolution?

I've had the same issue, the insulators that hold the heating element wire at the point where it crosses over from the front to back shift, the wire slides out of the insulator & shorts to the plate. This burns out the element & depending on which side fuses to the plate can actually back feed 110v to the timer from the other side causing the timer to continue to run thru the stop point & into the next drying cycle. Very poor design. If you can lock that one insulator in place by slightly deforming the metal so it doesn't shift / rotate, problem solved.
