My Maytag dryer started throwing the circuit breaker....husband checked with meter (retired HVAC) and says it's over amperage on one power leg...32A on one leg, 28A on other.
What could be causing this? Motor? Heater?
Is it possible that the centrifugal switch on the motor is not dropping out?
The thermal fuse went out, the motor stopped but the heater stayed on.
Any help is appreciated.

I could not find any info on the given model number.
Please check it.

The legs will not be the same as one leg powers just the heater and the other leg powers the heater plus the motor and timer.

Possible but I would doubt it.

I would check the heater, could be it is grounded.
Unplug the unit.
Disconnect both sides of the heater.
Measure across the heater, they are usually around 10 to 12 ohms.
Then measure from each side of the heating coil to the frame, both should be infinite ohms (open). Be sure to use a non-painted part of the frame.

If the thermal fuse that blew is the one on the blower be sure to check/clean your vent system. also make sure the exterior louvers on the vent can open fully

Thanks for your suggestions.....My husband found the problem with the dryer. The heater coil had fallen out of an insulator, and was touching the metal housing. It had welded itself to the metal. Replaced the heater and all is well. However, I am disgusted....this is a 2 1/2 yr. old. machine that does 3 loads a week! Occasionally 4.... Kids are grown and gone! They can't do a better job manufacturing? Silly question, I know. Nothing is made in the US any more.
