Default No heat and setting dial does not turn
Model Number: LGR5636JQ0   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

When I close the door and hit the start button the dryer turns but does not warm. Also the setting knob does not move and the dryer will run all day if I don't open the door. Is this something that I can fix on my own? I have been laid off for a while and really can't afford to pay someone to fix it.
thanks
Tom

Hi Tog1

Sorry about your layoff, it's become the norm these days so you are not alone.

You should be able to fix this dryer by yourself, but you will need a test meter (or even better, a friend who has one and knows how to use it)

Take off the back cover and test each of these components for continuity.

1. Thermal Fuse
2. Thermostat
3. High Limit Thermostat

It is likely you will find an open circuit in one of them, if so, replace it and you will be back in business.

If they are all good the problem is likely in your burner system and if you look at the many posts on this site involving gas dryer will not come on I think you will find how to fix yours.

Good luck, let us know what you find out.

I checked the thermal fuse and the thermostats and they seem ok. Before I get into the burner system could it be the timer since it is not moving? I set it and it will run all day if I let it. I also checked the vent and don't see any problems there. How do i check the igniter? I'm not sure how to get to it.
Tom
Thanks

HiTog1

I do not work on gas appliances, so I think you should review the posts on this Forum involving them and see what they say. Most of them report success by replacing the gas coils, which is what I would recommend before doing anything else. You will also see disucssions of the igniter and the flame sensor which could be causing your problem.

Your timer may be such that it will not advance without heat. Is it not advancing in the auto cycle or the timed cycle?

Anyway, I would try to get your heat issues solved, and then see if you need a timer, since it is a more expensive part.

Good luck, let us know what you do

Hi Tom,

The timer is the last thing I would suspect in such situation. Check the igniter. Normally it should be about 40 Ohms resistance reading. Check the gas valve coils as described in one of our previous posts: dryer runs but no heat

Here are the breakdown diagrams and Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL LGR5636JQ0 | AppliancePartsPros.com

Gene.
