My dryer makes an intermittant loud rattle/grumble noise mostly with a heavy clothes load. It goes away as the clothes get lighter as they dry. It is coming from down around the motor area. I have also noticed the dryer makes a thunk noise on start up. I took out the drum and found the idler pulley worn. I replaced that and the belt. I did notice the rubber isolator mounts on the ends of the motor were cracked but did not replace the motor. The new pulley and belt did not solve the problem. Because of the location of the noise and the thunk noise on start up I am leaning toward a motor because of the cracked isolator mounts but I dont know for sure. Could the motor torque cause the rotor or rotor fan to occasionally rub against the motor frame?

KAG,

You also will need to check the motor mount "straps", but you pretty much have it . The cracked isolaors or loose motor straps, will allow the motor to "tilt" forward, and the blower wheel will drag/rub on the blower housing base. The blower rubbing the housing, will cause the hub to "round out" and slip on the motor shaft, which could account for the "Thunk" noise as well. You probably want to consider:

Thanks and Good Luck,
