I just got this dryer (very lightly used), and it looks as though it only has a "high heat" setting -- at least I can't find a way to change it. I'm going to call Whirlpool tomorrow to confirm, but if this turns out to be the case:

Is it possible to alter or replace the thermostat in this dryer, such that the dryer always is at low or medium heat? We rarely use the "high" temperature setting but we need the knit setting a *lot*.

Looks like this is the bottom end unit in this series so anything with the dashed lines in the wiring diagram is not included.

In the parts listing take a look at the operating thermostat (Item 24 in the "Bulkhead parts" section. You will see it is adjustable. Perhaps yours is set on max (155 degrees) and you could set it at the low end (135 degrees). This may still not be enough for what you want.

If the temperature is a fair amount higher than you would expect out of a dryer perhaps the operating thermostat's contacts are welded together and you are running on the Hi-Limit thermostat.

Only other possibility I can think of is to get a thermostat with an internal heater as shown in the wiring diagram and then wire this in with a switch so that you can turn the internal heater off/on.

Perhaps someone else will jump in with a better fix!!!

oooh, thank you! 135 degrees should be fine -- we'll give this a try later today and tell you how it works.

Alas, we have now opened it up and looked at it -- and what we've got is not adjustable. 150 degrees is all she wrote. Can we replace it with an adjustable one?

Since it is shown as the replacement thermostat I cannot see why you could not use it.

As a double check click on the picture of the part, you will get e better view and then can take a look to see if the mount is the same as the one in the unit.
