Igniter turns on for a few seconds then turns off. Purchased new igniter but did not install. This part failed, some time ago. That is why I ordered one without checing. Parts list shows two thermostats. Could one or both of these be defective? How do you check them? Or replacement is the best way. Cleaned all lint from dryer. Are there any other saftey devices that could be at fault?

Jerry with the symptoms you've described your best bet is going to be replacing the coils. It's not a thermostat related problem. They only come into play when you've got flame and heat. Coils are a very common problem with what you've described happening. They are hard to check with a ohm meter. They might check good, but as soon as a load is put on them they will fail, and the valve won't open to allow gas to flow.
