My electric dryer suddenly quit heating. It's never had a problem before, and yesterday, in mid-cycle, it seems to have stopped heating. If I choose the high setting, and run it on timed drying, it will never get warm.

I have read many of the threads and I have already checked the ac outlet, and it reads 240 volts, so I'm pretty sure the current is good. Also no breakers appear to be tripped.

Just my hunch from experience is that the element went bad, but I have not checked anything else at this point. I do have a digital multimeter, so I am ready for some troubleshooting tips.

Thanks in advance!

p.s.
It is a Kenmore electric dryer, made by Whirlpool, and a very common design, as I have found out.

Perform the troubleshooting as described in one of our previous posts: http://forum.appliancepartspros...timer-wont-turn-off.html. Post the results and we'll help with the correct part numbers.

I went ahead and removed the heating element, tested it (bad- broken coil), ordered a new one, and reinstalled it. The dryer appears to be working again, but now that I am paying close attention to it (never even thought about it before), I am noticing that the element glows for a minute and then goes dark again, off and on..... I am assuming that this is normal via a thermostat as it reaches the proper temperature.

Is this the correct operation or should I be seeing it glow red constantly while the dryer is running in heated mode?

This is pretty normal operation and there is nothing to worry about.
