I can't open the top or front of the dryer to see what the problem is

Well, we are flying blind here without a model number, but for most of these if you open the door and look at the top of the door opening there will be two screws. Unscrews these and the top will come off. You will then find two screws holding the front. Be careful not to break any wires.
Good luck and if you still need help let us know and post a model number.
