The dryer was running fine. I opened the door to add one item of clothes. Now it won't start up. There is a buzzing noise when I turn the start switch so I know it's getting power. I've opened up the dryer and vacuumed out all lint. Pulley and belt are intact. I can't locate a fuse. What else can I check before putting it all back together?

I'll answer my own post. After cleaning out all the lint and the fan blades, plus turning the drum to make sure if was free, I put everything back together and the dryer is working again. Go figure.

This is one of the most common problems for all dryers. You did very good job.

Arghh. I got everything cleaned and hooked up again. The dryer was venting properly. Then it quit after about 5-10 mins. Same buzzing sound but drum wouldn't turn. I actually got it to restart by turning the drum and on knob but it quit again. So is there a problem with the thermal limiter, the plug or the pulley/belt system? Thanks for any help (clothes are rapidly piling up).

If the dryer does not start when you push the "start" button, but it'll start when you manually turn the drum then most likely the motor has gone bad.

Ok. I installed a new motor, idler pulley, belt and drum bearing with cup. Now the drums is hard to turn by hand and the new motor is making a racket and smells like burning if I leave it on too long. I've disassembled/reassembled several times to make sure everything's lined up properly. What now??

By the way, the old motor still worked when power was hooked up to it outside of the dryer. But it seized up when hooked up to the belt in the dryer. It seems like there's a brake on the drum.

I would double check the installation of the motor, the drum, the belt and the idler pulley.

Remove the belt from the motor and check how freely the drum is moving.

Lubricating the "U" part of the new idler arm is what finally did the trick. I suspect the idler assembly was the problem all along. I also realized that the blower housing had 2 tabs at the base that needed to be inserted into the base of the dryer housing (otherwise it sat too high and the metal seam on the drum grazed it as it rotated). The hardest part of the whole project was disconnecting the plastic blower housing from the motor shaft because I couldn't find a wrench that would grip the plastic. I gave it to a friend who finally got it off with a few drops of bolt loosener, a torque wrench and a vise. Everything's back together; the dryer started up and it's running great.
