Model Number: 96585200 Brand: Kenmore Age: 5 - 10 years
We inherited a Kenmore electric dryer that only runs when you press down the start button. It heats up, the tumbler turns - but only with the start button depressed. You let off on the button and it stops.
I replaced the start switch but it didn't fix the problem - at least it didn't make it worse! Any suggestions? Thank you for your help. Ads By Google Related Models |

Cannot find any info using the given Model Number.
Need to find a wiring diagram in order to help. Some units have a start relay, if yours does the relays coil may not be holding the contacts closed to keep the motor running. Some units use one of the centrifugal switches, it is wired in parallel with the start button. Once the motor is rotating this switch is activated and keep power going to the motor.

Sorry about that, I forgot to include the 110. so the correct model number is 110.96585200
I've done some more searching around the internets and I have a couple things I'm going to try - vacuum out the motor, and swap identical relays (with different functions). But any further advice you have would be great! I couldn't find a wiring diagram anywhere - If you know where I could download one that would be a great help as well. |

Well, good news for my problem - it took me a while to figure out how to access the motor, but after taking off the front panel and looking under the drum, I saw a lot of lint. A lot of lint. I vacuumed it all out - I was very careful to try and get it all.
Buttoned it back up and gave it a shot - It worked! Not sure how it's able to sense the lint build up, but I guess it does somehow. I hope your problem is solved as simply. |

I cleaned out all the lint I could, tried jumping all the 2-wire switches I could find and still it will not run and get hot..............I have read another thread that says it is most likely the main circuit board causing the problem...............off to the Sears Parts store.

I would not buy parts just yet Your machine is totally different from Pacobahn's Start a new thread using POST NEW TOPIC in the Dryer Repair with Model Number etc. Then you may get some help. Jumping on to someone else's thread just confuses things, especially if the Model Numbers are different.
