Here are your parts
Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL KEYS977EQ0 ELECTRIC DRYER | AppliancePartsPros.com

See the attachment for the tech sheet

Does it do this in both timed and auto cycles?
If only in auto then your moisture sensor may need cleaning.

Can you restart it right away or do you have to wait several minutes.
If you have to wait then odds are that the motor is overheating for some reason. It then trips it's internal thermal protect and you have to wait for the motor to cool down so the protect resets.

Denman
Thanks for your attention to my problem. I just went down and checked the unit and it makes no difference whether in Auto or Timed modes - the unit begins to tumble but stops literally after just 1 second or so.
Further, it will do this as many times as you like, in succession, without any waiting period in between.
Does this help narrow it down?

It does tell us that the motor is not overheating.

It sounds like the control board is no good.
The motor runs so the motor relay is OK but for some reason the control board is niot holding the relay closed.
