A model number would help as some units are hooked up different so you should look at the installation sheet.
On older units the norm is: 3 Wire: Ground and Neutral are the same so there is a wire (ground strap) from the white connection point (usually the center connector) to the machines frame. 4 Wire: Ground and Neutral are separate so the ground strap is removed/disconnected. The white from the line cord then goes to the Neutral on the terminal strip. The green or bare wire from the line cord is then connected to the units frame where the ground strap was connected. Include a model number and we should be able to find your install sheet.
