My whirlpool dryer drum is not turning, and in the back the heating element smelled like it was burning. I took off the lid and back and it appears that the belt is still in tact. Is it a thin belt around the middle or a thicker one near the back? Both are still in place. What shall I do now? It is about 10 years old

Madge,

A model number would have been a great help,

But,

Your vintage of machine, should have a drum drive belt, approximately 1/2 inch wide and slightly off center of the drum.

The large black "belt" at the rear of the drum, is most likely the drum seal.

As I understand this, you can start the unit, the unit heats, but the drum does not turn/tumble the clothes, correct ?

Can you hear the motor running, or if you remove the exhaust vent can you feel the hot air blowing out the tube ?

If you open the door or turn the machine off, does it stop heating ?

At this point, I think you may have a bad motor switch/motor, but can't be sure without some additional information,

Thanks,

:) :) :)
