History:
A while back my dryer was making a horrible noise, the clothes would not dry and it smelled horrible. I though maybe an animal had crawled into the exhaust and been killed when the dryer ran. After opening the dryer up I saw that the blower wheel had been blown apart and burnt lint lined the area.

I ordered a new blower wheel and drum belt (to be proactive.) I cleaned the inside as well as the exhaust duct. After putting it back together, I turned it on. It sounded great, I heard it light and checked the exhaust and it was blowing strong hot air. After the first load of laundry, I was surprised to see it was still wet. After trying to dry again, I noticed it was taking about 2 hours to dry a load, vs 50-55 mins.

I read a little online and decided to replace the thermo hi (505) and the thermo (530). I noticed there are about 3 other thermos – two of which I cannot find the part, and the other being the ultra care thermo. Since the ultra care was so expensive, I decided not to get it. I also ordered the dual and main coils.

After replacing these items, the dryer still did not dry. In fact it seems to be taking even longer (2-3 hours). We have tried low, med, and high heat – as well as timed dry and sensor dry. Nice thing about sensor dry is that it will run until done. The flame stays on for about 30 seconds, and re-lights after 5-8 minutes.

Recently I took it apart again to try to get down to business. I started with the flame detector. It tests as closed at room temperature and while testing externally, I could not get it to open. I tried a hair dryer and the flame from the stove. I installed it back on and tested it on the dryer. When the flame ignited, I disconnected one leg to simulate open. After 30 seconds the flame still went out. I now consider the flame detector to NOT be the problem.

I ran the dryer until the flame went out (30 seconds) and then placed a hair dryer (full blast on cold) over the next sensor (ultra care themo). After about 45 –60 seconds, the flame relit (4-6 minutes earlier!). So now I am suspect of the ultra care sensor, although I don’t think we are using ultra care. I pulled the sensor and on the two large leads, it is closed at room temperature. I headed using a hair dryer and it opened. So I tested with these two main leads jumped and the dryer ran for 60 seconds. The flame did not go out, I just cut it off because my arm was getting hot from the output. Seems to be the culprit.

My questions are:

  • What the heck does the ultra care thermo do?
  • Does this sound like it is the ultra care thermo?
  • Any other ideas of other things I can test, and how to test them?

Thanks, Ed

PS, I also stuck an eight layer piece of aluminum foil under one side of the sensor to create an air gap. This is causing the flame to stay on for 80 seconds (the first time) and 50 each subsequent time (2x improvement) and it cycels every 3 mins vs 5-8. It is still taking 2+ hours to dry, but seems better. thinking of replacing this sucker.
