Our dryer has been losing heat for the last month...it takes a few cycles to dry clothes. Today my wife tried the dryer and it would not respond, nothing, no response at all. I realize now, after cleaning it, the vent was filthy and the restricted air flow was most likely the cause of all this.

I removed the front panel on the dryer and after a little work was able to remove the, "cycling thermostat" once in my hand I gently shook the thermostat and heard something loose (not a good sign).

My question: If I replace this thermostat will that likely fix my dryer? I have read some other information, online, about a fuse or other thermostats which may also be causing a problem.

I will admit I am somewhat intimidated by all of this but willing to try in an attempt to save money.

I know the following may be difficult to answer:

Are there other parts which need replacing?
How difficult will it be locating these other parts and successfuling making the switch?
Should I put this dryer on the curb and make a new purchase.

Thank you for your time

Your machine has a number of safety devices which are designed to shut things down if the machine gets too hot, which it will if the vents are clogged. This is what happend with your dryer. These devices are not resettable, once they blow, they are blown. This is to make you open up the machine and clean things out before replacing the part.

If you will click on the model number, PYE2300 you will be taken to exploded views of your machine, and also a wiring diagram. You will see the safety devices (thermostats and thermal fuses). Use a meter to test for continuity, and when you find one that has no continuity, change it.

This is a repair you should be able to do. If you throw it away you are just tossing out good money. Just take your time, and make sure everything is cleaned out and there is no problem with lint getting into the machine and blocking air flow.
