The timer knob on my dryer has split where it slips on the shaft and therefore slips instead of turning the shaft. I ordered the knob but the part is not correct for the dryer. The dryer has never been serviced so the knob is the original. Any suggestions?

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for MAYTAG MDE9606AYW Dryer - Ele | AppliancePartsPros.com

Without being there it is hard to say what the problem is.
Take a look at the knob parts.
If you click on the parts picture a new page will open with more views. You can then click on them to enlarge.
Perhaps you can figure it out with the pictures.

Thw problem is the part in the picture is not what is on the machine. The part currently on the machine is a one part knob.
