Default GE Dryer Shuts off within 5 mins!
Model Number: DBSR463EG1WW   Brand: GE   Age: 1 - 5 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Okay here is my situation.

The dryer was not drying clothes properly and we just recently replaced the heating coils, which somehow got busted and broke all to pieces and the dryer was only purchased in 07. But anyhow I noticed before the replacement of the coils sometimes it would auto shut itself off.

Now here is whats going on. We have the new coils installed, and it is drying like its brand new but the only problem is sometimes at the start of the cycle within 5 minutes the dryer will shut off and you can't turn it back on until about 5 minutes later and I'm assuming thats after it cools down.

I tested this on different heat settings and it had the same outcome until I tried it with no heat and it ran fine and never shut off. So I figure it may be the safety thermostat may be broken letting it overheat and force it to shut itself off and cool down.

But I'm just assuming and I'm new to the forums and not familiar with working on dryers so can anyone make heads or tails of this, cause hopefully I would like to buy the right piece I need to fix this seeing as these thermostat parts are not cheap

Thanks in advance and I appreciate any advice or help

Here is the parts breakdown.
Replacement parts for DBSR463EG1WW models | AppliancePartsPros.com

I cannot get a wiring diagram for this unit, GE likes to keep all tech info a secret, Therefore the below is just an eduvcated guess.

Check inside the control panel perhaps a wiring diagram is in there.

It sounds like this is a motor problem.
There is not a thermostat that can shut the unit off, at least I have never seen one. Many have a thermal fuse that can do this but it will not reset.
The motor has a thermal protect built into it and the motor must cool down before it will reset.

Try turning the drum by hand it should turn fairly easily.
It could be there is too much drag on the drum and this is causing the motor to overheat.

Check that the seals inside the unit are all OK.

Here is a good site with basic dryer repair help.

Thank you for the response. I have not had a chance to tinker with the unit yet but I did stick my hand inside and try to rotate the drum around by hand. It took a fair amount of force to rotate the drum by hand and it wasn't fairly easy by any means. So could my problem be the belt, or what do you think I should do?

Won't be the belt.

or what do you think I should do?
Try turning the drums in a couple other dryers so you know what is normal.

If you still feel it is too stiff you will have to open it up again.
I would check the rear center tub support bearing, the drum seals, the idler wheel and the front glides (slide)

I have the same issue with my dryer. Did you find out what the problem was?

Never did find what was wrong, ended up giving the dryer away and buying a new one. too many parts were beginning to fail and it wasn't that old. I believe it had something to do with the a censor or thermostat but didn't check into it.
