Model Number: tedx640jq0 Brand: Whirlpool Age: 5 - 10 years
My Estate dryer runs while the push-to-start button is depressed, but as soon as I let go, it stops. The drum spins, and it gets heat. Before this it was working fine, albeit with a squeaky belt.
Any hints would be greatly appreciated! Ads By Google Related Models |

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL TEDX640JQ0 | AppliancePartsPros.com I could not find a wiring diagram for a JQ0. Here is one for a JQ1 which should be very close to your unit. http://www.servicematters.com/docs/w...%208528187.pdf Sounds like the centrifugal switch for the motor are not working. Could be the switch itself but may also be a connector.

Thanks, Denman. That makes a lot of sense. I appreciate your help.
One question: I don't see the centrifugal switch on the parts diagrams. Is it an integrated part of the motor, or have I simply not seen something in the diagrams? Thanks again! |

Yes it is an integral [part of the motor.
If you click in the picture of the motor in the parts (Item 62 in Section 2) a new page will open with more views of the part. You can then click on them to get expanded views.

I see the pictures you refer to -- they are not labeled schematics, but rather several views of the part, correct? Would I be correct that you are suggesting I might look at the motor and see if I can locate and assess the health of the centrifugal switch, and see if I can fix it. If I am able to see that it is not working and not repairable, I assume my option is to replace the motor. Is that the approach you are suggesting?
Thanks again for your help! |

I felt that a picture was worth a thousand words so suggested you look at the pictures.
There are 2 centrifugal switches, one for the motor and a second one for the heating coil. Since you are getting heat that tells you that the switches are being closed when the motor gets close to operating speed (not a mechanical problem). Therefore it is a bad motor switch and the only way to repair this is to replace the motor. I did have a unit recently where the problem was just a loose connector to the switch so I would check the wiring first.

Denman (and others)-
I am finally getting to this this weekend. I've removed the back and opened the top, and taken out the blower duct. What is the best way to get at the motor? Do I get it from the bottom of the unit, or from the back? I'd appreciate any guidance. Bests, Rob |

Have been at the lake for a week so unavailable.
Hopefully you were able to get the job done. If not the following should help. http://www.applianceaid.com/whirlpool-dryers.html
