What is this?

Model Number: FER211AS2 Brand: Frigidaire Age: 1 - 5 years

I have the above dryer and there is a little cover inside the drum just above the door that is made of plastic and is held in place by a friction snap. This plate keeps coming off. I can see nothing inside the hole and see no need for it. Not sure if it is hampering the drying process. Could someone tell me what is it's purpose? If it needs to be there how can I secure it so it will not come off in the load of clothes?
