Model Number: MDG6000BWW Brand: Maytag Age: 5 - 10 years
It appeared to be the same issue I have been reading alot about with other gas dryers. No flame, but the ignitor heats red hot. So I assummed it was the coils for the gas dryer valve where bad so I picked some up at my appliance store and replaced them, but still no flame??? What else could it be? Please help me diagnose what else could be wrong! Thanks.

Check your ignitor, sometimes even when they glow red hot, they aren't hot enough to light. It could also be the valve itself.

Took the valve off and made sure it wasn't plugged or dirty. It was slightly dirty so I cleaned it up. Put the valve back on and now it fires up but only for a short period (10 seconds) and shuts off. I got a new ignitor from my local appliance store to try and that has the same outcome. I also cleaned the flame sensors lens and that had no affect. Everything has continuity. Could the flame sensor be bad/weak and not keeping the gas valves open? The also gave me a new set of coils to try compared to my new ones I just installed, but no difference either. Any ideas?

I am 99% sure I figured it out. The cycling thermostat tells the coils to shut off once the temp reaches a set temp. So I removed the cycling thermostat and jumpered the circuit to keep the thermostat circuit closed while the gas valve fired and continued to stay fired until I removed the jumper. This tells me the thermostat is weak or worn out. Sound right???

That sounds correct.

It actually ended up being the gas valve itself that was bad. I took the valve off to clean it when the dryer wasn't working. I put it back on and fired it up the dryer worked for a few hours. Replaced the valve and it has worked great for weeks now.

Glad you were able to fix it!
