Default Hums when start is pressed then does nothing
Model Number: REX4635EW1   Brand: Roper   Age: 5 - 10 years

I inhereted a dryer when I bought my house three years ago. A couple of days ago when I went to use the dryer. it would humm when you pressed the start button before turning on, but eventualy turned on.

Yesterday, when I went to press start, it hummed but then did absolutely nothing. If you pressed the start button right away it was silient (dead).

However If you wait an hour or so it will humm on the inital push of the start button for about 2 secs then it goes silient (dead).

Ive looked everywhere online, and found it could be:
The door switch, start switch, thermal fuse, thermostat, time motor, or motor.

I guess I should check them all, however I was hoping someone had the same problem and could tell me what to fix before I replace everything.

Seems like a bad motor, need to take dryer apart and check motor for bad bearings or burnt windings. You can click on your model# above to get disassembly info and motor part #

Thanks, I ripped apart the dryer last night and found the motor was trying to run, but would sieze. I sprayed some WD40 on it and it worked. Its running now. I guess this is a quick fix for now, and I will need to replace the motor shortly. At least now I know what it is.

The only fix that may last is just working a quality graphite grease into the bushings both front and rear.Oil will not last long once the bearings get worn. Eventually you will need to replace the motor.
