Default white residue on dishes/maytag dishwasher
Model Number: MDB6600AWW   Brand: Maytag   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Just recently my d-washer started leaving a chalky white residue on dishes. It is especially bad on plastic cups, bowls and utensils. I have tried to wash these items by hand and once they dry, the residue is still on them. It seems as though it has been etched into the plastic.

I have not changed detergent, I have made sure the drying agent dispenser is full, and have taken apart and cleaned drain and strainer parts in the bottom of the inside of the tub. That did not remedy the problem. Also, I've tried different cycles(ie heated vs not heated drying) and using less detergent( thought I might have been using too much).

Am I missing something or is it time too buy a new one.

p.s. I would rather not spend too much money on it since it has some age on it and both racks are rusted in places.

Thanks in advance

Mike

Try running a load without dishes, using vinnegar, or a bottle of Dishwasher Magic.

Default Maybe your water supply changed

My town's water is normally quite soft. But, last month they said they were going to give our water supply a chlorine treatment. We started seeing lots of white residue on our plastics and some stainless steel items seemed to tarnish ... pretty significantly.

We're going to use vinegar to try and clear it up. That should work. Maybe you're experiencing the same thing.

Mike,

Did you ever get an answer to your question? I'm having the same problem. Dishwasher has worked fine for 9 years then suddenly started putting this white chalky film on my dishes, espically the plastic ones. Couldn't find anything wrong. I actually just bought a new dishwasher and it is doing the same thing. Let me know what you found out.

Thanks,
Jason

I have been having the same problem for the past few months. My maytag MDB9150 is also about 9 years old. I think it might be the pump gasket that sits on the bottom under the arm. Mine seems to have turned in to this white putty substance. I ordered a new one and will try replacing it. First I have to figure out how to get the old gasket off. :-(

Default Residue is from your detergent

I have had this problem for a few months. I have had to replace the filter in the bottom of the unit because it was caked with cement, and I have taken apart the arms to remove the caked on sludge. The only think I have found to clean the dishes is to dip them in limeaway or CLR or something similar. I also run it in the machine and use several rinse cycles.
The problem began when I unknowingly started using the 'new improved' Cascade which now has no phosphates. I had always used Cascade Complete with excellent results, but now, even with a rinse agent, I have this build up problem. I have talked with many people who have noticed this problem recently. They have a variety of machines, some have water softeners and some don't. The only thing in common is the detergent change.

Default Go figure

The white residue is from the new environmentally safe soap. Check your soap and see if it is phosphate free soap and that will be your issue.

Sorry DesertRat, didn't see you answered it.

Default answer to this problem?

Has anyone found the solution to this white residue on the dishes? We have torn it apart, run vinegar through it, run a special dishwasher cleaner through it and no difference. HELP!!
