A model number may help others help you.
Does sound like the element needs replacing. Just check that it is the ceramic element coating that is flaking off and not soap/calcium reside on the outside of the element itself. If it is the element, I would not use the machine till it is replaced. Most element replacements are fairly straight forward but you may have to pull the unit out from under the counter.
