Default Is it my fill valve?
Model Number: GU980SCGB3   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: 5 - 10 years

My dishwasher isn't filling to the correct water level.

According to the paperwork I have when I purchased the dishwasher I should have two qts of water from the supply line in 27 seconds which I exceed by a wide margin. I should also have approx. 2.2 gallons after the fill which I am no where near.

What I have done so far is disconnect the supply line and run it into a bucket to confrim the supply as indicated above. I timed the fill cycle at two minutes which again from the paperwork should be spot on. I left the door cracked to see if water was possibly draining on its own which it is not. I drained the water and measured out two gallons and poured it in the tub to get an idea of the correct water level, which I am way short on.

So I am leaning torward a fill valve. Can anyone confirm if I am on target here or is there another componet that can cause the issue I have? We do have hard water and I do get rust stains in the tub even though we have a water softner. I think we might have a tank on the water heater going bad. Just wanted to add this info if it may lead to something else with the washer.

Thanks.

Check your float switch AP2909457 Diagram #3. Even though the "time" may be right, the float switch cuts the water off when it is to the right level. Not everyboy has the same watervolume/pressure. The Time is just to make sure it has more than enough" time" to fill. This is a check for continuity... disconnect the voltage. Manually operate the float to make sure it goes off(UP) and on(DOWN). Being you have hard water , the float may also be sticking.

Have you checked the screen filter on the inlet side of the fill valve.

If dirty clean it, do not remove it as it is there to keep crud out of the valve which could hold it open and cause a flood.

Also check that it is not coated with calcium deposits.

You may want to drain some water out of your hot water tank, crud etc. can collect in the bottom of tha tank and will eventually build up to the point that it gets into the water lines.

I'm not familiar with the sreen on the fill valve, where would I see it if I had the fill valve in my hand? I'm guessing if I said disconnect the supply line and look in or do I need to take some of the fill valve apart?

Will check the float switch tomorrow.

Yes just remove the valve and look into the input fitting.

Just a follow up on what I found. I took the fill valve bracket out of the machine with the fill valve attached less electrical and water connections.. I then removed 4 screws that held the fill valve to the bracket and the valve separated into two pieces. This is where I found the screen on this unit. It was full of deposits. After cleaning and reassembly dishwasher now fills to proper level.

Thanks denman.
