on occasion I find the dishwasher timer appears stuck halfway thru the cycle and the washer running on wash but not advancing to drain. When I turn the knob to advance it seems rather hard to turn. Does a new timer seem in order or can the old one be lubricated. Once I turn it from the stuck position usually it will complete the wash and rinse and shut down.

Here are your parts

You could try opening the unit up and cleaning/lubricating it.
You really have nothing to loose.
If you are lucky it may work.
Sounds like the problem is in the gearing in the motor.
