Question Water in Drain Base and mold buildup
Model Number: 66513443k901   Brand: Kenmore   Age: 1 - 5 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Hi, a few questions about cleaning and maintaining my 66513443k901 dishwasher:

1. The door filter/air escape area always gets moldy and slimy - it's almost like it doesn't vent or dry properly - can this be fixed or modified so it isn't as bad?

2. When I remove the filter at the bottom of the dishwasher (Filter-Pump - circular filter about 10" across part #AP3130690 i think), under it there is what I think is a lot of standing water sitting in the Drain base - is that normal? See image

3. How often should the filter-pump part be replaced (Part #AP3130690 I believe)?

4. Should there be a build up of goop and muk in that area below the filter-pump?

This is the diagram for my dishwasher as far as I can tell: http://www.*************************...&prst=&shdMod=

Thanks!

A moldy and gunky bottom is normal in most cases yours doesn't look that bad. Make sure your check balls and drain area are clean and that if your drain hose has a flap or check valve that the flap is in tact or replace that helps water from coming back up in unit and being stagnant. Ohm check the heating element and if you have an amp clamp mulitmeter enter diagnostic mode and when it gets to the heating element working it should have around 6-8amps if not there's something wrong with the heating circuit this will cause a gunky dishwasher also. Cycle the dishwasher empty on the hottest setting and use 2 cups of vinegar once month in your dishwasher to help with cleaning the unit. Also realize dishwashers are not dishwashers they are sanitizers it's your job to clean the dishes not the machine so the dirtier the dishes you put it the less of a life your machine will have and the more gunk buildup. Voltage and ohm test your steam exit motor if you think it's malfunctioning during diagnostic. Good luck

Thanks, we've cleaned out the bottom and will keep an eye on it.

Attached is a picture of the filter unit, you can see one side looks clean (bottom left of picture) and the right side and top side is very dirty - enough that it looks like it is time to replace it. Is this normal, or dirty enough to replace at this time?

Totally understand what your saying about cleaning.. that said to sanitize something it seems odd to leave that much guk and water at the base as part of normal operations

There is no motor or fan in the steam vent that I can see inside the door or in the diagrams for the door - maybe that is the problem - no fan to help move the air?

Your unit may not have that exhaust fan some older units don't.....also check your water heater and make sure its set to 120 degrees or above that's what dishwashers require. Also turn on the kitchen sink till you get hot water all the way to that location of your house then turn on dishwasher that helps also.

Thanks, the hot water is good and we run the water prior to operation already.

Any thoughts on that filter unit?

Looks fine to me that's not bad at all to be honest...............Avoid using pod or powder detergent use gel type also don't use brands like Sun, Purex, Kirkland, Arm and hammer or any real cheap brands.
