Default Squeal/Whine & Flashing LEDs
Model Number: KUDC25CHSS1   Brand: Kitchen Aid   Age: More than 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

For many weeks, our dishwasher has been making a fairly loud higher-pitched whistle/whine for the first few minutes of the wash cycle. The tone is steady in pitch and intensity though sometimes a second tone (close in pitch to the first) appears as well. After a few minutes, all tones fade out and the dishwasher functions normally without any further glitches.

Yesterday, the dishwasher would not start AT ALL. A couple of function indicator LEDs on the touch panel were illuminated. Pressing the START button had no effect aside from changing the pattern of LEDs (I believe a couple flashed on and off about 5 times, that was it.)

I cut power to the dishwasher overnight via the wall switch wired to unit.

This morning, I re-applied power. I closed the dishwasher door. The LED above the CANCEL button was illuminated (steady). I pushed CANCEL and a few moments later, the usual front (touch) panel indicator LEDs illuminated. By usual, I mean the lights that indicate which cycle and options have been selected. In my case, it's 'anti-bacteria' (water heating), 'normal', 'energy saver dry', etc.

I pushed the START button and the dishwasher sprang to life, and began washing "normally" - high-pitched squeal and all.

However, about 25-30 minutes into the cycle, the thing quit and all the touch panel indicator LEDs went out. Yes, there is water in the bottom of the dishwasher. Bizarre!

My quick research suggested that replacing the motor assembly would 'cure' the noise problem but now I'm wondering if there is a second problem.

The control panel has been replaced once before - I know they do sometimes fail but I am just not sure that is the problem.

What repair strategy would you suggest? I am not averse to spending $200-$350 in parts as this was one of KitchenAid's higher-end machines.

Besides the control panel and the motor/wash arm assembly, what else would really go wrong in the future with the machine?

Kitchen aids have been getting worse over the years...........The button issue you have where it lights up randomly or doesn't recognise your touch is possibly a touchpad issue or main control issue as far as your squeeling noise you could have something caught in the sump pump or impeller in the bottom or the sump motor is going out. The unit should start with a drain first draining the water out before starting a cycle alot of times people have broken debris in there also...........clean out your machine all the way to the bottom with a shopvac and see your results.

Thanks, HRM. When you say "clean out your machine all the way to the bottom with a shopvac" are you speaking of cleaning the bottom of the tub below the washer arm ass'y? Is any disassembly required?

I know there is a circular plastic screen present. Below that, there is some nylon(?) mesh that looks like it would prevent any foreign material from making its way any further. Is this the area I should be looking for debris or are you referring to a different area?

Any reference to a diagram or pictorial drawing would be helpful. Thanks!

... on second thought, would replacing the pump and motor ass'y do the trick? Very reasonable here: http://stores.dishwasher-repair-part...bly/Detail.bok

Nothing is guaranteed when dealing with electronics.......here's a part breakdown on disassembling and you'll need a t20 and possibly a t15 bit....

Got it! Thanks for the video which details the cleaning process. I'll give it a shot.
