dishwasher fills, empties too soon

My dishwasher fills at the beginning of the normal cycle, when the dial gets to the light wash cycle (the next option on the dial), the dishwasher empties but continues to run. I let it get to the rinse cycle and it doesn't fill at the rinse cycle. Any ideas?
