GE Profile dishwasher won't reset or start
Model Number: GSD4920X65BB Brand: GE Age: More than 10 years
Actuated "start" and returned later to find that washing had not been done. Opened door to find dirty water in basin so tried to recycle, but it would not "reset" or "start". Read somewhere that it may be a problem with the drain pump and that should check (1)sump and (2)the check valve behind rear filter.
Removed sump cover and felt yuck, etc. in it, so I used a hand pump to remove about 2.5 gallons of dirty water into a 5 gal bucket. There was a lot of little dirty bits that may have been paper (paper towel?) or food entrained in the water. Further feeling around in sump revealed a triangular piece of wine glass (approx. 1.25" on each side). I also can feel a piece of fairly stiff (but bendable) piece of metal wire extending about 3/4" into the sump through a plastic screen in the side of the sump. I'm able to bend the wire somewhat with my finger. I'm wondering if it is for anchoring the screen in place and has somehow gotten displaced.
I also removed the rear filter screen in order to unscrew the check valve assembly and make sure the spring biased mushroom-shaped valve is functional. It was somewhat dirty and, while trying to clean it, I may have slightly distorted the sealing edge of the mushroom - so probably should replace it.
Put it all back together and it flashes PF and still won't start or reset. Turned off ckt breaker for 15 minutes but still get the same thing. Opening and closing door several times caused PF to disappear and all the options to light up on the far left side of the digital display, but it still won't reset or start.
I had also read that something could be engaged with the cutter or grinder that breaks up food and the like before it goes through the drain pump, and prevent the pump from working, but I don't know how to access it from the inside of the dishwasher. Do I need to remove dishwasher from beneath the counter in order to check that possibility?
I'm assuming (and hoping) it's not the control assembly and am attempting to eliminate the other possibilities.
Does any of this sound reasonable? I realize this is long, but I've tried to be fairly exacting in explaining my problem so that it will be clear to someone familiar with the machine. Any and all help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.
