Default Dispenser only opens 1/2 way
Model Number: GHDA485N00   Brand: GE   Age: Less than 1 year

Hello: I have a GE dishwasher #GHDA485N00, just installed last month. The soap dispenser lid doesn't open all the way; it seems to hit the bottom wire of the top rack and opens only half way or maybe less. When I open the door after the cycle I can hear it flip back all the way, and now that I am conscious of this issue, I have also peeked in there to see the dispenser lid resting on the rack. Consequently there is always soap left in the cup. I purposely do not block the cup with big dishes. GE was no help at all and suggested I make a service appointment. I think it's a design flaw. Has anyone seen this before? Can the top rack be cut, and then somehow sealed to prevent it from rusting away?

Thanks for your feedback.
Kay

Hi Kay,

The best thing is to have a GE tech to come over because your dishwasher is under the manufacturer warranty and it should be no charge to you.

Gene.

I am having the same exact problem with mine, though mine is 4 or so years old, but new to me. GE model: GSD6200J01WW

Seems crazy that the detergent door is situated that high on the door right in front of the rack.

After letting it start a few minutes, I opened the detergent door and it seems like water is seeping by the rubber door seal maybe a little, getting the detergent damp. If it gets damp, it sure won't fall out through such a tiny door opening. I can't find this little seal for sale anywhere or I would try that first before sawing on the upper rack.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Update if anyone cares:

The soap dispenser door is definitely blocked from opening (very much) by the upper rack. IMO, this is poor design. The soap then gets a little wet at the bottom and clods up.
Solution: The lowest metal parts of the upper rack are what the dispenser door is hitting. I sawed out a few small pieces of the rack, allowing the door to flip open a little further.

Working great now.

The cup is designed to only open so far. Yes it is suppose to hit the upper rack. water from the lower spray arm shoots up in there and rinses out the soap. When you load pots pans and bowls on the bottom left front of the lower rack it blocks water from entering the cup and washing the soap out of it. This is explained in the use and care guide. I sure don't recommend cutting the racks, they will rust out, and void your 10year warranty on the racks.

Well I went to the extent of putting nothing on the lower rack in that front corner and nothing in the top rack in the front. Same result. Clotted detergent. As much as half of it clotted and left behind.

No problems since altering the rack a little to allow the door to open just 1/4 inch or so further.

Too bad they didn't mount the dispenser just an inch or so lower on the inner door.

I'll seal the cuts I made.
