Default GE dishwasher not draining - motor not turning on
Model Number: GSD2230Z07WW   Brand: GE   Age: 5 - 10 years

GE Potscrubber Dishwasher that came with house in 2000. I realize that this model is a pile of junk but would rather fix it than replace it with a new one if at all possible since I've had to replace a microwave, washer and 2 AC units in the last year (lousy cheap homebuilders ).

Drain cycle does not click on - motor does not run at all - all other cycles work fine and motor turns on. I have read many postings here concerning drainage problems but since the motor does not even click on for the drain cycle I wonder if it could be a control/timer issue and not the solenoid. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Wife said she'd make brownies and mail them .

John

I am a little confused by your statement "motor does not run at all - all other cycles work fine and motor turns on". It either works or it doesn't LOL. OK so here goes cause I really want some brownies sent up here to Canada.
On your model you could have one of two common problems. First off remove lower kickplate. With the door UNLATCHED reach underneath and between your motor and pump there is a cooling fan blade. Try turning the fan blade (should turn easily) if it doesn't, force it till it does. Latch the door and try it. If the cooling fan is ok, inspect the drain solenoid attached to the pump housing. Look for any melted plastic and check to see if the plunger has good movement all the down into the solenoid. If not that solenoid and plunger may be the problem. If it does seem to be ok, you may want to check and see if that solenoid is getting power when the timer calls for a drain cycle. Do some checking and get back to us.

Since u have had to replace so many things by chance have u had to replace a garbage disposal? I made that mistake once and bought a new dishwasher lol. I forgot to take the knock out plug out of the new disposal....man did i feel dumb. The positive side i got a 100.00 buks for and old dishwasher.

1. The cooling fan spins freely both ways.

2. the Solenoid moves down easily to the drain position. I engaged the door latch and started the cycle and engaged the solenoid by pushing it down and the tub drained - at least the washer is no longer filled with dirty dish water. No melted plastic anywhere. At one point, the solenoid remained in the down engaged position after I pushed it down (I was spinning the timer wheel) - after that it would release back and not stay down .

Does this indicate a good solenoid? What would a logical next step be?

Like nuts in your brownies?

As a matter fact, I have replaced a garbage disposal before - just not in this house.. Replacing a disposal ranks right up there with replacing a kitchen sink faucet which I have done on this house.

If you get 115 volts to the drain solenoid, but it doesn't pull plunger down, replace the solenoid.
