You might have had one of the springs break. The easiest way to replace or adjust is the pull the unit out of the cabinet about 6 inches and you will see the spring(s) on each side. If you need to replace one, go here to order it. You can also adjusted the door tension by moving the spring a few notches toward the back.

I will try this weekend. Do they sell a door spring at local Home Improvement store? I found a part online but if it would be nice if I can get it tomorrow.

You can buy such parts from an appliance parts store only.

Default how do you replace it?

I've tried for the past hour and a half to put a new spring on my Kitchenaid KUDS01FLSS5 with no success. I can get the spring on but once I try to loop the cord around the wheel and onto the door either the spring pops off or I cannot release enough tension in the spring to pull it all the way around. Is there a special tool to help with this task?

I will usually put the spring through the rear frame hole, wrap the lanyard around the bottom roller and attach the lanyard end to the door hinge (do this with the door closed). Then with pliers, I will tension the spring until I can slip the lanyard over the upper roller. No special tool required.
