Two days ago, my Maytag dishwasher stopped working. Everything on the LED panel seems to works except for the start/cancel button. So, I can chose the normal or heavy or light wash and tell it whether to sanitize, but I can't get the thing to actually turn on. I've turn it off and on again, etc. but it seems to be a dead button.

Does it sound like I need a new panel? And is this something a handy person but not an expert can fix himself? (I live in a rental, and the appliances aren't covered by the landlord, for some reason, so I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars fixing the machine.)

I would start by checking for a loose electrical connection under the machine. Turn it off first at the breaker, so you don't get shocked or electricuted. Remove the toe panel (four screws [1/4 inch hex drive]). then remove the cover of the electrical box. Look especially for a loose ground or neutral connection.
