Whirlpool Heating Problems

Model Number: DU840 Brand: Whirlpool Age: 1 - 5 years

I bought this dishwasher new a year ago from someone who remodeled their kitchen but had never used it. I dont think the heating element has ever worked. Is there something I should have done when I installed it? Is there anyway I can test for this? Could there be any other reason for the element not to be heating up?
