The automatic ice dispenser will not work, looking at the parts diagram it could either be the motor or the solenoid. Any suggestions which it is

Kurt,

A proper model number, would be a great help,

There are several different dispenser systems on Whirlpool built refrigerators.

But, Basically

At this point, it's not a bad solenoid, the solenoid is activated by the selection of crushed or cubed ice.

If the dispenser motor does not run, there are several posibilities.

Loose, broken wire at the door hinge harness.
Bad, inoperative auger motor.
Broken actuator switch or wire, in the front dispenser assembly.

A model number would be a great help, in assisting you.

Thanks,
:) :) :)

Kurt,

On the freezer door, at the top hinge, remove the plastic hinge cover,

Under the cover you will find the dispenser wire harness connector.

Separate the connector, check the pins and the plastic connector for, loose wires or pins, look at the plastic housing for a brown discoloration around the pins(arc marks from loose connections).

Check the wires, where they pass through the hinge opening, for broken, bare wires.

At the dispenser, check the ice dispenser paddle, make sure it is not loose, or broken from the dispenser housing, it may look OK, but you need to wiggle and twist the paddle, there'll be some movement(1/8 to 1/4 inch).

When you press in on the dispenser paddle, you should hear the actuator switch, "click", then another click when you release the paddle.

**Of course, you're doing these checks with no power to the refrigerator**

The most common problem with this style unit and your complaint, is a broken paddle mount assembly, or bad actuator switch.

To access the switch and paddle assembly :

Along the bottom edge of the dispenser front panel, you'll find a molded slot on each side of the bottom edge.

Using a flat blade screw driver, and a pad to eliminate damage to the door panel, pry out on the bottom of the panel with the screw driver(approximately 1/4 inch),and lift up on the panel, to disengage the locking tabs, and remove.

The switch mounting plate is attached to the housing with 3 phillips head screws, remove the screws and slide the panel out. you'll then have access to all the components you need to check.

Once you've determined what parts you need, or if the reccomended checks are all OK, drop us a line, we'll be happy to direct you through the other checks at the auger motor or research the parts you need.

Good Luck,

Joe,
I took off the front panel and noticed that the clip that holds the switch in place was broken. I manually tried the switched and it worked. So i have ordered the bracket from you. Thanks again for explaining how to get into the panel area. I will be back with you guys anytime I have an appliance issue. Have a great day,
Kurt
