Dishwasher does not finish cycle

Dishwasher appears to work normally until the timer dial gets just past the wash (scrub brush on timer dial) cycle. The timer does not advance past that point and the dishwasher just keeps running. Is this a timer problem or is there a problem with one of the sensors causing the dishwasher not to complete the cycle?
