Unhappy over heating and white film on dish's
Model Number: dul240xtpq1   Brand: Whirlpool   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Seriel # FR3901307
Heating coil has a layer peeling off it about a 1 1/2 long. The hard plastic dish's have a white film on them. the glass's have a powdery substance on them. When run it smells like plastic burning. The smell stays on the dish's.
The Heater coil looks VERY hot.
I few yrs back there was a recall on the coil i believe. They came out and replaced it. Could it be something to do with that?
If not what could it be and what parts would i need? Is it even worth fixing?
Please let me know ASAP. i have a family of six and I am in dyer need of my washer back
Thank you
Chris

Chris,

The layer of coating on the element, is it a white colored , chalky coating?

If it is, it's a hard water and detergent deposit built up on the element, basically normal.

As for the glasses and the dishes having a "powderry substance" and white film on plastic dishes,

That could be due to :

1) Water temperature not hot enough (120 dgrs minimum) at the start of the cycle.

2) Too much detergent, chemical breakdown of detergent, foaming.

3) Improper fill level(slow fill, water level low).
(start the machine in a normal wash cycle, let fill and run 5 to 10
minutes, open door and check the water level in bottom of tub, it
should be as high as the bottom of the heating element at the
minimum).

Do these quick easy checks, and let us know what you discover,
we can direct you from there.

Thanks,

HI je.
Thanks for the reply.
Looks like your right about the film on the coil.
The water fills up above the coil also.
The soap box lid is broken so i will order a new one.
What could be makeing the burning melting smell?
Also should we take the coil ot and clean it? If so how do we get it out?
thank you agian for working with me.

Boomer,

Great job,

You've got plenty of water,

I would not remove the element to clean it,

Make up a solution of distilled white vinegar and hot water, let it soak a few minutes, then use a scotch brite pad or scrub brush to carefully clean off as much build up as possible.

Check with your water supply company, and see if they will give you the average grains of hardness of the water they supply.

I have a feeling you'll find that the odor will dissipate, with new detergent and a clean element. Also keep your plastic articles away from the element(prefer you use the upper rack).

I always reccomend the detergent to use as:

Plain (no additives) powderred detergent , and a rinse agent if you prefer.

Purchase the smallest amount box possible, based on your usage.

Use the proper amount based on the grains of hardness of your water.

And make sure you have 120 dgr water on the first fill, when you start the machine.

I think you'll be a lot happier.

Drop us a line if you need more help,

Good Luck,
